Dominican Men

dominican men

  • Oscar is representative of a culture that isn’t prevalent nor necessarily accepted in Dominican community. Nerd, geek, and odd are all words used throughout the story to describe Oscar and his interest.
  • Diaz highlights the intimidating force of men in Dominican communities and counteracts this with Oscar, who is consistently described as fat and unable to attract women.
  • The attraction of women is a central theme in the novel. Dominican men are said to easily attract women, but Oscar’s inability to do so hinders his societal progress. Additionally, this aspect calls attention to the inferiority of women as they are objectified as mere objects for Dominicans (and men in general) to win in this game that we know as “growing up”.
